Project summary:

Located in the old city of Dessie, Ethiopia, the Dessie Museum promotes the history and cultural heritage of the Wollo community in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

The museum was vandalised and looted during conflict in 2021 and is now at risk of physical damage and neglect.

It is the only historical museum in the city and is an essential repository for the identity and unique character of the Wollo community and the country as a whole.

The grant has been awarded to restore and upgrade the museum and facilities. It will reopen and continue as an important regional centre for culture and education.

The local community is being offered the opportunity to train in heritage protection and the project will run initiatives to replace damaged and lost objects in the collection.
