Project summary

The pre-Islamic Alexandrian city of Charax and other archaeological sites in the Basrah province were subjected to illegal archaeological excavation, looting and vandalism as a result of conflict and instability within the country.

The project surveyed and documented both sites and increased awareness and understanding of 14 archaeological sites within the Basrah province, which led to remedial rescue work at some of the sites. It also contributed material to the new Basrah Museum Gallery.
