Project summary

Local cultural heritage in Western Uganda was being threatened by flooding and glacial melt in the Rwenzori mountains and West Nile region.

This project worked with the Bakonzo and Alur communities of Western Uganda, sharing skills and knowledge within communities.

The team documented and mapped intangible cultural heritage and heritage sites that were under threat to mitigate the impact of climate change. Heritage sector training resulted in site management plans adopted by community leaders.

Sector advocacy, knowledge sharing and community awareness raising activities have all highlighted the importance of heritage and the risks posed by climate change.
