Project summary:

The intangible cultural heritage of minority communities in Syria, including oral traditions, folk stories and proverbs, is at risk of disappearing due to ongoing conflict which has led to the displacement of people with knowledge of this vital heritage.

The grant has been awarded to help safeguard the diverse heritage of these minority communities. Intangible heritage will be recorded and documented to ensure it can be accessed and utilised by future generations.

The project will create podcasts and web series around mythological storytelling, train young people in the traditional craft of woodblock printing and provide heritage safeguarding training.

Heritage safeguarding training will empower local organisations to conduct research on minority heritages, and training in traditional craftsmanship will boost employment opportunities in the region. Communities will become more empowered to engage in and protect minority heritage into the future.
