Project summary
Civil conflict and neglect have led to the destruction of a large portion of buildings in the only historic area of Kabul remaining following years of turmoil.
With the overall aim of protecting heritage and intangible craft skills in Afghanistan, the first phase of the project restored five historic buildings and 20 bazaar shops in Kabul’s Old City Murad Khani. It also trained hundreds of builders in construction techniques and nearly 1,000 artisans in traditional craft and design. A Design Centre has seen ongoing independent sales totalling nearly £3m.
In the second phase of the project Turquoise Mountain implemented the same successful model in the province of Bamiyan, restoring parts of a 19th century caravanserai in addition to further heritage and artisanal training.
