Egypt’s construction industry has hailed CPF’s ‘Recovery Lab of Port Said’ as 2025’s ‘Conservation & Heritage Initiative of the Year.’
This project recognises the architectural and social significance of nineteenth century Khedive Abbas Helmy II Bazaar. Its unique blend of local design and European modernism has been repaired through a collaborative partnership programme partnership programme led by Brandenburg University of Technology, with Galala University, Al-Yakaniya for Heritage and Arts, and Port Said Ala Ademo.
The award celebrates the collaborative effort to celebrate Port Said’s unique modern architectural heritage while addressing the long-overlooked impact of conflict on the city.
Sepideh Zarrin Ghalam: ‘This initiative would not have been possible without the vision and trust of the Cultural Protection Fund, whose ongoing support has been instrumental in bringing neglected heritage back into public focus.’
Taking a people-first approach, the Cultural Protection Fund grant advanced the documentation of multiple layers of Port Said’s urban heritage, and part of Bazar Abbas’ façade was renovated. In the mission to preserve its original features by crucially involving the local community, ‘Recovery Lab of Port Said’ promotes small-scale, community-centered strategies for urban conservation and development, focusing on capacity building and knowledge transfer.
A representative of the Cultural Protection Fund team states:
‘It’s wonderful to see "Port Said Recovery Lab" recognised in such a meaningful way. This accolade highlights the dedication of a team that has centred the community in the restoration of a significant local building, while ensuring its safeguarding for future generations.’
